Empower Farmers South Sudan (EFSS) teaches Conservation Agriculture to increase yields, restore soils, and equip youth and communities to build a hunger-free future.

Our Mission

Empower Farmers South Sudan (EFSS) teaches smallholder farmers how to grow more food with less effort, using the Foundations for Farming model. Our mission is to improve food security, create dignified agricultural livelihoods for the communities, and help families thrive through climate-resilient farming.

The Challenge

Food insecurity and soil degradation threaten millions of families in South Sudan.

Years of conflict, climate shocks, and unsustainable farming practices have left soils exhausted and harvests unreliable. Many smallholder farmers work hard but still face hunger seasons, low yields, and limited access to training or markets.

Food insecurity and soil degradation threaten millions of families in South Sudan.

Most farming households depend on unpredictable rains, exhausted soils, and traditional methods that no longer meet today's climate challenges.

Farmers work hard, yet many still face hunger seasons and low yields.

The Future We Are Building

We envision rural communities where:

Every household produces enough food year-round.

Degraded soils are restored to fertility.

Youth lead the transformation of agriculture.

Farmers earn more through better practices and market access.

Our Strategy

We help farmers grow more food, restore their land, and build stable livelihoods through three proven strategies:

EFSS delivers training directly within farmers’ own communities and fields rather than in distant classrooms. By using household Pfumvudza plots, village demonstration sites, schools, and churches as training venues, farmers learn conservation agriculture in their real production environments. This approach removes barriers of distance and cost, reinforces practical learning, and ensures that skills are immediately applied, accelerating adoption and long-term behaviour change.

1. Train Farmers Where They Are

2. Equip Youth to Lead

3. Restore Land and Grow Markets

EFSS places youth at the centre of agricultural transformation by training and mentoring them as Interns, Fellows, and Champions. Through structured Train-the-Trainer courses, field supervision, and leadership development, young people gain the technical, facilitation, and ethical skills required to serve as community agriculture leaders. This investment builds a sustainable pipeline of local trainers who carry conservation agriculture forward beyond project cycles..

EFSS combines soil restoration with market-focused farming to help smallholder households move from survival to surplus. Through composting, mulching, agroforestry, and moisture-conserving practices, degraded land is rehabilitated and productivity restored. At the same time, EFSS supports farmer organization, collective marketing, and buyer linkages so that increased yields translate into reliable income and stronger local food systems.
